The first-generation Lexus IS300 has always been one of our favorite cars. When Lexus developed the IS, the goal was clear: attract a younger generation of buyers and compete directly with cars like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Lexus gave its engineering and design teams considerable freedom to create something with real personality, and the result was one of the most memorable compact rear-wheel-drive sport sedans of its era. Even today, the attention to detail stands out. The cabin features leather and Alcantara upholstery with contrasting piping, metal door-sill plates, metal speaker grilles, aluminum pedals, excellent steering-wheel ergonomics, and one of the most distinctive gauge-cluster designs ever fitted to a production car. The exterior was equally forward-thinking. Clear taillights—later copied extensively by the aftermarket—came directly from the factory, while xenon headlights gave the IS300 a genuinely upscale appearance for its time. And then, of course, there is the drivetrain: the legendary naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE inline-six paired with a rear-wheel-drive chassis. It is a combination that helped give the IS300 the reputation it still enjoys today.
