1998 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible The Corvette crossed flag logo originally started out by using an American Flag, crossed with a checkered flag. Federal law prohibits the use of the flag in any advertising, so they had to come up with another flag. Chevrolet being of French origin, they decided to use the French symbol for peace, the Fleur-de-lis, with the checkered flag. Over the years it has gone through many iterations, but the basic principles still exist. For consignment, a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette convertible with a title verified 60,895 actual miles. A nice example that's been recently serviced, has fresher tires, and a 4-speed automatic. Exterior The factory applied Torch Red over fiberglass is draped over the high performance chassis of this car with hidden headlights, and integrated bumpers that provide the aero package that can whisk you down the highway with just a touch of the throttle. A black canvas convertible top presents in nice condition and when down, the profile of the Vette takes on an arrow-like sharpness. Round embedded tail lights and the dual exhaust piercing out the center of the integrated rear bumper makes for an epic Corvette rear view that differs from the quad exit. In profile, 17-inch 5 spoke wheels are upfront and 18-inch in the rear and are wrapped in staggered width rubber for a perfectly aggressive look, and our tires enjoy a late 2022 date code. Imperfections include areas of dull paint, solvent related bubbling, edgewear, peeling clear, underbody scuffs including chin, chips, scratches, and orange peel in the door jamb. Interior A swing of the doors and we have excellent black covering the door panels which includes a lower red panel with integrated Bose speaker and rubberized switchgear up top. Black leather bucket seats live inside, slight variants of the originals, and appear to be in good shape. A central screen runs the AM/FM/CD player and rear view camera while a series of round analog gauges staring at you to keep you informed of the vitals up front, behind the sporty steering wheel. Dark red carpet is on the floors and is in good condition and covers the cargo area under tonneau and the decent sized trunk. Drivetrain A 5.7 Liter LT1 V8 is under the hood, heavily shrouded and capable of 345hp. This is connected to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transaxle that keeps power routed to the limited slip rear axle with 2.73 gears. Undercarriage Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with the typical surface rust and oxidation. C5 Corvette suspension is on all 4 corners, which consists of an independent SLA system with forged aluminum control arms and a transverse leaf spring in the front and for the rear an independent 5 link arrangement with another transverse leaf spring. The dual exhaust now features Borla S-type mufflers terminating at two chrome tips. Naturally, power disc brakes are on all four wheels. Drive-Ability This red roadster provides all of the usual Corvette perks; quick acceleration, track like handling, and a cozy and comfortable cabin that has fine ergonomics. We also note that all functions on this example work as they should save for an illuminated AntiLock light and a service traction control system message, and it's back to the showroom to join the 40+ Corvettes currently in inventory! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. We still consider C5 Corvettes a performance bargain. It's a lot of car and one that can be driven daily, or saved for those special weekend drives, especially when the weather is nice and you can drop the top!
