1973 AMC Javelin

1973 AMC Javelin Hardtop It's nice to know you're driving a winner. Winning performance makes specially modified Javelins champions on the racing circuit. But when we call Javelin a winner, we're talking about the features like its fast sloping hood, bubble fenders and functional instrument gauges that wrap around you with cockpit efficiency. Features like this make Javelin America's distinctive sports car for four. In other words, we've translated winning performance on the track into a superb street machine. From the 1973 AMC brochure. For consignment, a 1973 AMC Javelin SST hardtop showing 89,172 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Just 25,195 hardtop Javelins were produced in 1973 including the SST model. Another 5,707 were built as the high performance variant, the Javelin AMX. Exterior Opinions vary on AMC's offering but we can all agree they produced some unique cars, including this Javelin with its subtle Coke bottle shape, broad C-pillar and rear quarter, and long, flat hood. Even the hood stripe is unique, covering the nose with pointed wings, then T'ing back to the cowl with an ever narrowing flow. Inset headlights give way to a forward grille with trimmed marker lights, a consistent AMC design. Up top, a 1972 inspired split vinyl top was added and then the flat rear window flows to a short decklid and enormous rear spoiler. Inset quad tail lights take their place on the black latch panel while a bumper hugs close and hovers over twin tail pipes. 14-inch AMC Rally wheels hold staggered size tires with a mid 2021 date code. Imperfections include cracking paint, chips, filler, edgewear, paint runs, bubbling, and paint over some rust. Interior Plastic formed door panels include a touch of simulated burlwood and the black plastic suffers from some separation and cracking on the driver's door. Black vinyl bucket seats occupy the front with the driver's side showing some light wear. The passenger bucket and rear bench are in great shape while up front, the burlwood panel from the door continues to face the instrument cluster of three round cornered square readouts and an AM/FM radio with an added Bluetooth radio in the console and dual gauge cluster under the dash. We notice some warpage on the dash pad along with some separation. In the center console, a horseshoe style shifter in the plastic faceplate offers a cool feature and black carpet covers the floor. Our headliner is also black and intact and the trunk is barren and clean. Drivetrain A clean engine is found in the bay and it's the 360ci V8 with an Edelbrock intake, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, and headers. It's mated to a rebuilt A727 Torqueflite 3-spped automatic with a shift kit and power is routed to the AMC 20 rear axle. Undercarriage Uniformly black and clean underneath, we do note some residual oil about and some transmission drops on the transmission pan. Dual exhaust runs through a pair of MagnaFlow mufflers on their way to a chrome tipped exit and suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back. Disc brakes are supplied up front with drums in the back.  Drive-Ability The 360 starts up with a robust exhaust note as we grab the 3 spoke sport steering wheel and head out to the test loop. Our tires have a date code of mid 2021 so the car sticks well, tracks straight, and brakes on demand. We note the heater blower is not working, the factory radio does not belt out any tunes, and the gas gauge is not accurate. Beyond these items, all functions on this '73 AMC work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.        In our eyes, we simply don't see enough Javelins at the mall and this one represents a short lived design that is considered extremely uncommon today.
