1949 Pontiac Chieftain

$26,995 Cruisin Classics is pleased to present this gorgeous 1949 Pontiac Chieftain sedan coupe. 1949 was the inaugural year for the Chieftain and the first all-new car design to come from Pontiac in the post WWII years. This example that we have here today is dressed in a very high-quality respray of its original colors - a Sage Green body with a Wellington Green top, a beautiful color combination. Accenting the green is an abundance of mirror-finish chrome and brightwork that looks amazing in the light. Up front, you'll find a large rounded hood with five chrome bands running down the center culminating with a large Chief Pontiac head ornament with a red headband. Below, on the vertical face of the hood, is a bright Pontiac script badge. The chrome grille is a two-tiered affair with teeth on the bottom, a red Chief Pontiac badge at the center, and integrated turn signal lights. Under the grille is a wrap-around chrome bumper with guards in front and overriders at the sides. Mounted in the area between the grille and bumper are bright trimmed fog lights. The round headlights sport bright bezels and chrome eyelids. If you like the view up front, you're going to love it from the side! There is a sun visor above the chrome-framed split windshield dressed in Wellington Green with chrome. Brightwork continues with belt molding that starts at the windshield and circles the car just below the windows, serving as a dividing line between the colors. Adding more bling are a side molding spear, chrome rocker trim, rear gravel guards, fuel door trim, wiper arms, side mirror, and door handles. The front fenders are both adorned with Silver 8 Streak badges and well-fitting fender skirts that class up the rear quarters. The cherry on top of the side view are the black steel wheels with Pontiac hubcaps all wrapped in BF Goodrich Silvertown 4-ply wide white wall tires. Back at the rear of the car, the decklid emulates the hood with five chrome bands that lead down to a chrome plane-shaped trunk handle with a concealed keyhole. Below is a Pontiac script badge flanked by a star on each side. Just like the front end, there is a wrap-around bumper with overriders on the sides and guards near the center - but in the rear, an overrider connects the guards. Finishing off the rear are chrome-ringed round taillights and a flared chrome exhaust tip cover. Lift the large hood to find an engine bay that you'll be happy to show off at any car show or cruise-in. The whole compartment is coated in gloss-black paint and at the center is a big blue 268ci Silver Streak inline 8-cylinder engine. To the left of the block is a 2-barrel carburetor topped off with a black oil-bath style air cleaner with correct decals. This Chieftain still runs on a six-volt electrical system, and steering is manual. The inline-8 is mated up to a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission that shifts as it should. Stopping power is provided by 4-wheel manual drum brakes with a single reservoir. As you can see, this Pontiac is still very true to the way it rolled off the assembly line back in '49. Open the driver's door and take a trip back to 1949! The trim tag on this Chieftain tells us that it was born with deluxe dark grey cloth seats and dark & light grey side/door panels - and that is what it looks like today. Luckily, the interior has been redone at some point in the recent past, and it looks fantastic. The door panels are a stylish mix of grey patterned fabric, flat grey fabric, grey vinyl, and bright trim - all in good condition. The front and rear bench seats are dressed in the same grey patterned cloth found on the doors. The seats are good-looking, comfortable, and have not noticeable demerits. We did note that there are neither front nor rear seat belts. Overhead is a tight light grey felt headliner and underfoot is grey pile carpet with matching carpeted mats.
