According to the detailed tome, 1949 Chevrolet Engineering Features, 1949 Chevrolet trucks are no longer called Thriftmaster and Loadmaster, but are identified by the number of the series to which they belong, (3100, 3600, 3800, 4100, etc.) More than 20 pages identify all the changes and new features of the '49. Exterior Looking period authentic in its Brewster Green coat, this truck's frame off restoration about 20 years ago included two stage paint, augmented by the five bar chrome grille up front and large Chevrolet nameplate on the nose. A black running board forms a step on the bridge between the flared fenders under which body colored 15-inch wheels wear a red lettered hubcap and yellow pinstripe around the rim. In classic font, Chevrolet is emphasized on the tailgate with white paint while reverse lights have been added to augment the minimal tail lights externally perched on the outside. It's a five window cab and the rear window overlooks an oak lined bed with green rails and in very nice condition. Imperfections include scratches, scuffs, chips, edge wear, orange peel, general inclusions, chips on top of the tailgate, and a bubbled rear cab panel. Interior A brown panel under the door hardware rests in a gray colored base, the saddle door pulls are a nice touch, and both doors present cleanly with some scuffs on the passenger side. That brown vinyl is extended to the bench seat which is in great shape and rests behind the standard 3 spoke steering wheel, showing some welcome patina and fronting a simple dash with two main gauges of old, and two added gauges in the center that include oil pressure and voltage. A clean, ribbed pattern is below and bleeds over to the glove box, creating an integrated design. Black carpet is below and brown vinyl covers the ceiling and along with the visors, all are in nice shape. Drivetrain A clean engine bay houses the 216.5ci inline six cylinder rated at 90 horsepower and getting gas from a 1-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual is on the tree and routes power to 4.11 gears in back. The truck runs on a 12 volt system. Undercarriage Simple, clean and dry is how we find the underbelly of the truck, with a single exhaust through a stock style muffler that exits behind the rear bumper. Drum brakes are on all four wheels and leaf springs are utilized at both ends of this classic truck. Drive-Ability We've seen our share of classic pickups and this one will satisfy the itch of owning one for the next steward!
