1931 Ford Model A Roadster HOT ROD is published to inform and entertain those interested in automobiles whose bodies and engines have been rebuilt in quest of better performance and appearance. With those words came the introduction to the premier issue of HOT ROD Magazine in January 1948. It should not be surprising that the above editorial credo has survived the ravages of time, automotive evolution, and the scrutiny of millions of readers. Hotrod.com, April 2024 For consignment, a 1931 Ford Model A Roadster showing 292 mile, but the true miles are unknown due to PA title exemption. Lots of newer parts have been applied to this even though it looks like a build right out of the 1950's veering little from the kind of cars that set the hobby car world ablaze at the time and started a cultural revolution. Exterior Speed over paint was a priority back then so Satin Black was a common cover color leaving more time to work on the engine and less attention to polishing paint. That's not to say there isn't paint; as often the case, red and white pinstriping is included with a large flourish on the decklid, Rich's Rat Rod on the front apron, and striping on the radiator shell, and a lot of whimsy found in the angry duck hood ornament in chrome, and an image of Yosemite Sam and the words Back Off on the rear valance. The headers and side pipes are epic and so too are the 15-inch red wheels with white wall tires heavily staggered in size but the car still sits level with the drop. The narrow windscreen is coupled with a wood rim around the cabin to embellish the profile. Imperfections include inclusions, bubbling, a few chips, cracks, and an uneven rocker panel, none of which deters from the vintage look. Interior Black vinyl door panels show a touch of patina and remain presentable while inside, a pantone cloth bench seat shows some use but fits nicely. A wood rimmed APC steering wheel on a tilt column fronts a dashboard with some basic gauges and an airbrushed scene from Mel's Diner depicting this car and a few others in cartoon design. Gray carpet covers the open floor since the shifter is on the column and the trunk is barren and holds the battery. Drivetrain Here we have a 327ci V8 from 1967 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb and intake along with finned Edelbrock valve covers, chrome headers, and some red accenting to match the block. It's backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Undercarriage Simple and clean underneath where we find a transverse leaf spring with a four bar arrangement up front and coilovers with a four bar in back for suspension. Disc brakes are visible to all up front and drum brakes are tucked into the rear wheels. The exhaust is angular, short, and sweet. Drive-Ability The V8 starts right up and everyone knows it! This one is not shy about expressing the cannons going off in each cylinder. Meanwhile, the car has great power, straight tracking, and provides the ultimate visceral experience. We note the horn doesn't work but all other functions operate as intended.
